Authorities confirmed late Wednesday that a Kansas college student missing for nearly a week has been found safe.

According to a message posted on the Overland Park city Twitter account, “Aisha Khan was found safe and unharmed tonight. She was neither abducted nor held against her will.”

Khan had called her sister last Friday morning from the University of Kansas Edwards Campus and left her a message saying she was being harassed by an apparently drunk man and that she was “freaked out.” When her sister went there looking for her, she was gone and her backpack and cell phone had been left behind.

Khan's cousin told Nancy Grace earlier on Wednesday that her family did not believe she had run off on her own.

“There is nothing for her to run away from,” Farouk Sheikh said.

In a statement released Wednesday night, Overland Park police announced that they had been in contact with Khan, verified her identity and determined that she was safe. Police said no criminal acts had been committed and the investigation of Khan's disappearance is complete.

They do not intend to release any other information related to the case.

“They’ve always liked each other and there was no forced marriage here,” Farouk Sheikh told HLN’s Nancy Grace on Wednesday.

According to Sheikh, 19-year-old Aisha Khan had known her husband, Waseem, since childhood, but they married soon after he moved to the United States from Pakistan last summer. He suggested that it was similar to his own marriage, which he described as “the modern-day version of an arranged marriage.” In his case, he was introduced to his future wife by his parents, but they dated for several months and fell in love before marrying.

Sheikh said the family has considered the possibility that Khan, who was last seen on the Edwards Campus of the University of Kansas in Overland Park on Friday morning, had run away voluntarily, but they did not believe she would do something like that.

“There is nothing for her to run away from,” Sheikh said in the interview airing Wednesday night. “If she didn’t like what she was doing or the situation she was in, she would just change it herself and this is not a situation where she’s forced to do things and stuff like that.”

Khan tried to call her sister and her cousin several times over the course of nine minutes on Friday morning before she left a voicemail for her sister claiming that she was concerned about a man who appeared to be drunk and had been harassing her. However, she did not answer when her sister called back and her sister found her backpack and cell phone left behind on a table when she went to the school to look for her. Overland Park police told HLN that nobody else saw this man or could verify what she described in the voicemail message.

Khan, a student at Johnson County Community College, was on the KU-Edwards campus preparing for a final exam in government affairs that day, Sheikh said. According to police, three men nearby saw a woman matching her description walking away from the area alone, but authorities have not confirmed that the woman was Khan.

Sheikh described his cousin as “very headstrong,” “fun-loving” and “outspoken.” He said she was very close to her sister and cousin and she never expressed concerns to them about her relationship or her living situation. Khan and her husband live with her sister and brother-in-law in Olathe.

Sheikh said that he had personally examined the area around the bench where Khan’s sister found her belongings and he believed that it was possible that an abductor came from inside a building 10-15 feet away or through a hole in the fence surrounding the construction area on campus.

According to Sheikh, Khan was looking forward to meeting her mother at afternoon prayers on Friday and spending time with her because she had been so busy studying over the last few weeks, but she never arrived. The family is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to her safe return.

“My daughter does deserve to be with me,” Trista Reynolds told Nancy Grace in an exclusive interview airing Monday night. “I’m the one who raised her for 18 months.”

Ayla’s father, Justin DiPietro, reported the 20-month-old missing from his Waterville home around 8:50 am on Saturday, telling police that he last saw her when he put her to sleep around 8 pm on Friday night. Reynolds had filed a complaint seeking parental rights on Thursday, but she does not believe that DiPietro was aware of that filing.

Asked why she is seeking custody now, Reynolds called DiPietro “vindictive” and “verbally abusive” and claimed that he has refused to let her have Ayla for even one day since he took custody of her in October. According to her, Ayla has broken her arm and missed several doctors’ appointments since DiPietro started caring for her. He allegedly told her that Ayla was injured accidentally when he fell on top of her while walking up steps with her in his arms.

Attempts to reach DiPietro or his family for comment on Reynolds’ claims Monday were unsuccessful. He has not been charged with any crimes involving Ayla.

Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey told reporters that investigators are aware of the custody issue and are monitoring it, but he said they still have “every possible thought and angle in mind. This is currently a very open investigation.”

At a Monday press conference, Massey said that the Maine Warden Service was coordinating a search of the Messalonskee Stream near DiPietro’s house. He reiterated that family members have been “very cooperative” with authorities.

Massey refused to address most of the reporters’ questions about specific elements of the investigation, but he said police have not drawn any conclusions about what happened to Ayla from the leads they have pursued so far. He detailed the resources being provided by the several state and federal agencies assisting with the search, saying that all of them have the same goal in mind.

“The focus obviously is to bring Ayla home,” Massey said.
